About the Board
The Library Board consists of eleven trustees, each elected for 3-year terms. Each January, at the Library's Annual Meeting, four trustees are elected. At its regular January meeting, the Board elects its officers to serve one-year terms.
Notice regarding the dates for nomination or election of Trustees is published in the Rockland Journal News in December. "Nominations for Trustee must be submitted in writing to the Secretary of the Board at least two weeks before the annual meeting." Trustees must be voting residents of the service area of the Library (resident of one of the Villages of Nyack, South Nyack, Upper Nyack or Grand View, or any unincorporated part of the Nyack Union Free School District, in the towns of Orangetown and Clarkstown, exclusive of Valley Cottage.
The current Library Budget is available for public review, along with last year's tax return, throughout the year at the Reference Desk. Once passed by the voters, the Library's public tax support is drawn from the taxpayers of the Nyack School District each year. Subsequent additions to the Annual Library Tax are presented in a district-wide referendum for approval each year, usually in February. Those votes are preceded by an Information Session shortly before the vote, and a complete budget overview is also made available both for the Nyack Library Budget, as well as the Valley Cottage Library Budget. The Valley Cottage Library traditionally joins with us for a proposal to the Nyack School District voters. Our tax support is also supplemented by other sources of income such as fines, fees, investments and charges, to complete the total operating Budget. Prior notice of all budget votes is always published in the legal notices of the Journal News, beginning 45 days in advance, and information is also mailed to each household.
