Berta and Elmer Hader moved to Grand-View-on-Hudson in 1919. They rented the old Lyall Hotel for $25 a month and lived there until the little stone house they built on River Road was ready to move into in 1925. In that house, they created the artwork for 91 books, including their Caldecott Award-winning The Big Snow. The Haders were dedicated to making children’s lives better, to preserving the beauty of the Hudson, to fostering conservation efforts and to forging incredible friendships.
They lived a storybook life in a storybook house. Karen Tolley, director of Hader Connection and co-author of Berta and Elmer Hader: A Lifetime of Art, and Sybilla Cook, author of Drawn Together: A Biography of Berta and Elmer Hader (to be released in 2015), visited the Nyack Library in 2015.

Book Nook & Friends of the Nyack Library
The Book Nook, located on the lower level next to the Computer Resource Center, offers a wide selection of books and media at affordable prices. Purchases can be made at the Computer Resource Desk.
You’ll also find a variety of Friends of the Nyack Library gift items on display, including tote bags, t shirts, note cards, magnets, and books. These items are available for purchase at the 2nd Floor Circulation Desk.
All proceeds directly support the library.
Free Little Libraries
Two Free Little Libraries are now available in the community, located near the Children’s Park in Memorial Park and at Veterans Memorial Park. These are stocked by the Friends with donated books.
This initiative was made possible through a Girl Scout project in collaboration with Sadie, creating a meaningful partnership between the library and the community.
Local History Scholarship
A new Local History Scholarship is available to a Nyack High School senior, funded by the Friends of the Nyack Library. This opportunity reflects a shared commitment to supporting local students in their educational journey.
For more information, please contact Kat Sullivan in the Local History Department.
The Friends of the Nyack Library are proud to host the Carnegie Concerts featuring music for all throughout the year.
With a $10 donation, the audience can engage with musicians performing live in the beautiful Carnegie Room.
