Nyack Library
Internet Use Policy
Introduction:
The Nyack Library is committed to providing available electronic resources to all Library users of all ages and backgrounds. Access to the Internet is an important means to that end. Library staff continually collect and evaluate electronic resources to make the best possible sources available. Digital Navigators on staff are here to help with one-on-one assistance, and a librarian can help you book an appointment with one.
The Nyack Library believes in free access to information. We are guided by the American Library Association’s Bill of Rights and Freedom to Read statement.
How to access:
The Library’s public computers located in the Computer Resource Center (CRC), 4th floor Adult Services, Teen Center, and Children’s Room are for patrons seeking to use the Internet and Library-installed software. These computers are used with a library card issued by a Ramapo Catskill Library System (RCLS) library or a guest pass provided on request at a staff desk. The Library has an open Wi-Fi network for use on borrowed laptops or personal devices. There are dedicated Library catalog computers and mounted tablets available to search the online catalog without a library card, and an express Internet terminal, located in 4th floor Adult Services, limited to one fifteen-minute session.
Rules for use of Internet:
- Sign into public access computers using your library card or guest pass. Do not use another user’s identification, bar code or password, with or without permission.
- Promptly give up any computer when requested by staff, or when time is expired.
- Do not download or install software from an external drive onto Library computers or devices.
- Use headphones when listening to audio content, and keep the volume low so as to not disturb others.
- Stop viewing any site that creates an uncomfortable environment for other Library users or staff. Determination of an uncomfortable environment is at the discretion of the staff. If a staff member asks you to stop viewing a site, you must do so.
- Do not view materials that violate federal or state laws or regulations.
- Do not damage or attempt to damage computer equipment or tamper with computer settings.
- Do not violate any copyright laws, software licensing agreements, or policies of websites that are visited.
- Do not attempt to gain unauthorized access to another person’s information.
- Do not attempt to interfere with system operations, integrity, or security.
- Do not use Library computers to distribute unsolicited advertising.
- Do not engage in any activity that is harassing or defamatory.
Failure to comply with the following rules may result in loss of Library privileges.
