Nyack Library Launches Rockland County’s First Bike Borrow Program
The Nyack Library launched Rockland County’s first Bike Borrow Program, offering residents a free and convenient way to explore the community on two wheels.
Library cardholders can borrow a bicycle just like checking out a book. The program promotes healthier travel options, reduces reliance on cars, and encourages a stronger connection to the local environment.
Program Background
This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve mobility and support sustainability across New York State. It was introduced through the New York State Department of Transportation’s Statewide Mobility Services Program, which supports projects that expand access to inclusive and accessible transportation options.
In collaboration with 511NY Rideshare, the program aligns with regional goals to reduce emissions and increase access to affordable, active transportation.
How It Works
Any adult age 18 and older with a Nyack Library or Valley Cottage Library card in good standing can borrow a bike from the Computer Resource Center desk.
- Bikes are available on a first come, first served basis
- Bikes can be borrowed for a full day
- Maximum loan period is one week
- Borrowers must sign a waiver and user agreement
- Bikes must be returned within the loan period
All bicycles are maintained by Piermont Bicycle Connection to ensure they are safe and ready for use.
Community Impact
Inspired by similar programs at Comsewogue Public Library and Wyandanch, Nyack’s program brings this model to the Hudson Valley.
Library based bike lending helps expand transportation access and supports residents who may not have reliable access to a car, while promoting healthier and more sustainable ways to get around.
