Quadricentennial Film Series
"Before the Bridge"—a one-hour documentary by Steve Bretschneider—is the story of life in the riverfront villages during the half century before the opening of the Tappan Zee bridge in December of 1955. Thirteen residents speak about their lives growing up in a much more remote and rural environment than we know today. Topics covered include: The River, Fishing, Hiking, Ice, The Ferry, The Train, The Great Oom, School, and Moving Houses.

"The Hudson-Fulton Celebration of 1909 in Nyack," an exhibit of photographs, artifacts, and excerpts from newspaper articles in the local history collection at the Nyack Library tells the story of the celebration one hundred years ago that commemorated Hudson and Fulton.

Hudson River Day at the Nyack Library’s Depew House front lawn
Featuring children’s boat craft; skits and music on the Hudson River and its history by students of Lanti Music Studio; and American folksongs performed by the Rockland Camerata. After the program, we’ll head down to the river to watch the historical flotilla go by.

Kathleen Eagen Johnson, author of The Hudson-Fulton Celebration: New York's River Festival of 1909 and the Making of a Metropolis, will deliver an illustrated lecture based on her book. After the lecture there will be a book signing.
